Winston Churchill
I attended both traditional high school and homeschool simultaneously to strike a balance between academic, social, and personal growth. My journey had two distinct but equally important aspects.
Firstly, I opted for traditional high school to immerse myself in the typical high school experience. I craved the camaraderie of peers, the social interactions, and the sense of belonging that comes with being part of a school community. I also had a deep passion for sports, and playing on competitive teams was a significant part of my identity. These experiences allowed me to explore my interests beyond academics, develop teamwork and leadership skills, and enjoy the essence of being a teenager.
Secondly, I continued my education in and remotely with a homeschool co-op, and its educators, Workspace Academy. This choice was rooted in the need for an academically stimulating environment that fostered my personal growth. In homeschool, I encountered passionate educators who not only helped me excel academically but also nurtured my intellectual curiosity. The flexible and tailored curriculum allowed me to explore subjects of personal interest at my own pace, deepening my understanding of various topics.
Homeschooling at the co-op also served as a sanctuary where I could be my authentic self, focusing on academics without the pressures of social conformity. It enabled me to find my academic voice, identify my strengths, and clarify my goals for the future.
Worskpace as it was originally known, closed down during my 10th grade, but I was fortunate to have forged the connections there to continue remotely with several of the educators one-on-one.
Balancing these two educational worlds was not without its challenges, but it allowed me to thrive academically while enjoying the social and athletic aspects of high school. My parents and I agreed that this unique combination was the best way to prepare me for the future by maintaining a focus on both academic excellence and social development. The experience taught me time management, adaptability, and the importance of pursuing a well-rounded education, ultimately helping me become a more well-rounded individual ready for the next chapter in my academic journey.
Whether at Workspace Academy before its closure or in remote sessions, my homeschooling journey has been a haven for intellectual growth. Selecting courses that truly engage my curiosity, it's been one of deep exploration and personal enrichment. I've had the opportunity to immerse myself in truly amazing courses.
"Mock Trial," led by attorney Peter Gross, was an immersive course where we students delved into the world of civil and criminal trials. We took on the roles of attorneys and witnesses, engaging in compelling debates for either the prosecution or defense. Teams squared off against each other, sharpening our litigation skills.
This course served as a dynamic platform for us students to explore the intricacies of the legal system, refining our argumentation and critical thinking abilities. "Mock Trial" fostered a passion for debate and law in me, as I became proficient in courtroom procedures, evidence presentation, and persuasive communication.
This course ignited a deep interest in law, offering a real-world understanding of the legal profession. "Mock Trial" wasn't just an academic experience; it was a journey of self-discovery and the exploration of a lifelong passion for the law and the art of argumentation.
The course was taught by an outside educator. It was a creative and interdisciplinary program where we students utilized the art studio to design and construct a pet shop using cardboard boxes, enhancing our hands-on crafting skills. We painted and decorated our individual shops, infusing artistry into our project. Using 3D printers, each student created animals we wanted to sell, pet supplies, and food items to sell in our shops, applying technology and design thinking. We also created our own individual websites for our pet shops.
The course went beyond the creative process; we developed essential entrepreneurial skills by creating a business plan, exploring marketing strategies, and understanding financial aspects. We gained practical insights into running a business, fostering creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. This unique approach to math education combined creativity and business acumen, fostering well-rounded students ready for real-world challenges.
"Sparking Entrepreneurial Mindset" was an innovative high school course conducted in the "Ideas" lab, designed to resemble the dynamic setting of "Shark Tank." In this program, we embarked on a journey of innovation and business development.
We were encouraged to brainstorm creative ideas and develop them into viable business proposals. The course combined aspects of entrepreneurship, critical thinking, and practical problem-solving. We not only learned how to identify market opportunities but also gain the skills to pitch our concepts convincingly, just like on "Shark Tank."
This hands-on course equipped us students with the entrepreneurial mindset required to transform ideas into real-world ventures. It offered us a glimpse into the world of business, where innovation and adaptability are paramount. Through a blend of mentorship, project development, and presentations, we are more well-prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the entrepreneurial world.
While my public school experience provided enjoyable courses, I found greater depth in my homeschooling journey. Despite this, I appreciated some courses, found below, which sparked my intellectual curiosity and complemented my holistic education
I chose to study Spanish for three years, not out of obligation, but due to my family's extensive property holdings in Mexico. Speaking their language is invaluable as it enhances our travel experiences and connections with the local community.
Both classes, Sports & Entertainment Marketing and Sports & Media Production, intrigued me due to my passion for the sports and entertainment industry. These classes allowed me to explore the business and creative aspects, offering insights into marketing, media production, and how they intersect within this dynamic field.
"Architecture & Design I" captured my interest through its exploration of the built environment's aesthetics and functionality. This class provided the opportunity to delve into architectural principles and design, allowing me to visualize and appreciate the art and science behind creating spaces.
"United States History" fascinated me by unraveling the nation's rich past, social developments, and political landscapes. Exploring pivotal events and their impact on American society ignited my curiosity about historical narratives, shaping a deeper understanding of the country's evolution and its global influence.
